Where is Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas?

Hi Travel Buddies,

South America tours are getting more popular nowadays, one of the major attractions is Machu Picchu.  You may wonder where is Machu Picchu?  It is located in Peru, A UNESCO Word Heritage site, it is also known as the lost city of the Incas.  Your visit to South America, in particular to Peru, will not be complete without it.

This spectacular Inca architect ruins were only rediscovered in 1911 by the American archaeologist Hiram Bingham after the locals led him there.  At a tall height of 2,430m, this lost Incan Empire has become one of the most famous ruins in the world.

The peak season is from June to August (dry season).  The Inca Trail is closed during the rainy season which is in February.  About 2,500 visitors are allowed to enter into the Machu Picchu daily.

Machu Picchu is also the ending point of the most popular Inca Trail, a spectacular 4 to 5 days hike among jagged peaks and Inca ruins that start from Chillca.  We are not suggesting that you do the hikes because they are more for the serious hikers.  A more easy, relax way of viewing this famous monument is now available by taking the tour packages.

Typical tour packages to South America often include this as one of the major attractions as part of the itineraries and you can easily find many to compare at the coming NATAS Fairs.  For example, we found at the pre-NATAS fair last week 2 interesting packages:  the 13 days South America Highlights and 14 days Chile, Peru and Ecuador with Galapagos Islands, both cover Machu Picchu.

We intend to research on Galapagos Islands, another unique destination in South America.  Stay tune. 🙂
