Tir Na Nog Review

Posted by: | Comments (1)

Hi Travel Buddies,

We stayed at Tir Na Nog at Gili Trawangan for 3 nights in our recent vacation.

According to Wikipedia, Tir na nog means “Land of the Young” in an Old Irish mythology, a place where sickness and death is non-existence,  a place of eternal youth and beauty.

Tir Na Nog is located among the many accomodations found along the main strip in Gili Trawangan.  Why did we choose Tir Na Nog?

Hi Travel Buddies,

Where are the Gili Islands?  Many of our friends popped this question when we shared with them our most recent vacation.  Again, our friends wonder what are the things to do on these tiny islands?

Well, Gili Islands are 3 tiny miniscule coral islands, lying off the north-west coast of Lombok, Indonesia:

Gili Trawangan, also reputed as the ‘party island’ is the largest of the 3 islands and the furthest from mainland, Lombok.  Gili Meno is the middle and smallest island.  Gili Air, being the nearest to mainland, Lombok, offers a lovely Mount Rinjani-facing coastline.

In Gilis, there are no cars, no motorbikes, no dogs, the main form of transport is horse-and-cart taxis called cidomos.  Yes, no dogs but lots of cats and party animals (tourists) roaming around the islands. 😛

We stayed 3 nights at Gili Trawangan.  Wish we could have stayed one night more… Top 5 Things we like about the Gilis:

Hi Travel Buddies,

Our next stop after Pura Tanah Lot was another balinese temple – Pura Luhur Bataukau.  What is so special about this temple?  Our driver, Made told us that this is the only temple in Bali that is located in a forest.

Pura Luhur Batukau, one of the nine directional temples in Bali, is the guardian of the west.

We were greeted with rather strict rules on the sign board that prohibit the following people from entering the temple: Read More→

Hi Travel Buddies,

All the travel books we read about Bali will mention Pura Tanah Lot as one of the top 10 sights in Bali, so we were very excited to embark our first visit to a Balinese Temple – Pura Tanah Lot, founded by the wandering Hindu priest Nirartha, who sailed to Bali from Java during the 16th century.  In the eyes of the Balinese, Pura Tanah Lot is one of the holiest places in Bali.

Our driver, Made picked us up at 9.30am sharp at our hotel in Kuta.  After a comfortable ride of about an hour, we finally arrived.  Much to our surprise, the site is huge, we may not know where best to start our walk if is not because of Made, who did a great job to guide us to start from the west.

He led us to Pura Batu Bolong, a small Balinese Temple located at the edge of the rock formations facing the Indian Ocean.  The rock formations has a natural hole underneath and “Batu Bolong”, means rock with a hole, how interesting!  We wonder why this temple was not much mentioned as we think it is really beautiful.

Next, we walked towards the direction of Pura Tanah Lot.  This was the place where you can get really nice pictures of Tanah Lot from far.  Fun loving tourists enjoyed getting wet from the strong pounding waves from the Indian Ocean and you see many surfers in action!

During low tide, you can walk over to the temple and take a sip of the holy water or view the holy snake.  We went down to take a peek at the entrance to the holy snake but we thought this may be just another touristy show.
